The Horn Without the Band
Choose Trumpet and the model isolates the brass line from drums, bass and keys, so a solo from a big band record comes back as one clear part.
One Step to B-flat
B-flat trumpet reads a whole step above the sounding pitch. In the editor that is a two semitone transpose, and playback and the piano roll move with it.
Print It for the Section
Download a PDF for the stand, MIDI for a DAW, or MusicXML to finish the part in notation software.

Can I turn a song into trumpet notes?
Yes. Upload the song with Trumpet selected and Songscription isolates the trumpet from the full mix and writes it as sheet music. Trumpet is in beta, so give lip slurs and fast passages a listen against the recording.
Is the part written for B-flat trumpet?
Check the key against the recording first. A recording carries sounding pitch, while a B-flat trumpet reads a whole step higher. If the notes match what you hear, transpose the score up two semitones in the editor to get a part a B-flat player can read. A C trumpet needs no shift.
Can I transcribe a trumpet solo from YouTube?
Yes. Paste a YouTube, TikTok or Instagram link and the audio is pulled for you. Audio files (MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, M4A) and video files (MP4, MOV, WebM) work as well.
How do I practice a solo once it is transcribed?
Slow the playback down with speed control and follow along on the sheet music or the piano roll. Once a passage sits under your fingers, bring the speed back up. Export a PDF if you would rather practice away from the screen.
Is trumpet transcription free to try?
Yes. You can transcribe unlimited 30-second clips for free, with a free trial for longer ones. Paid plans give you more transcription time and support for longer files.
How do I get trumpet sheet music from a recording?
Upload the song, keep Trumpet selected, and Songscription writes out the trumpet line. Then transpose it for your horn in the editor and export a PDF, MIDI or MusicXML file.
- Add the audio. Use a file, a video, a link, or a take recorded in the browser.
- Trumpet is already chosen. The model separates the trumpet from the rest of the band.
- Shift for B-flat and download. Transpose up two semitones if you read B-flat trumpet, check the high notes, and export.
What range and key does trumpet music use?
Most trumpeters play a B-flat instrument and read treble clef, with the written note a major second above the sound. The table shows the usual written range, which is how the part should look once it has been transposed.
The transpose control moves the score up to 12 semitones either way, so the whole step for B-flat is two presses of the up button. Our guide to transposing a song for trumpet explains the interval in detail.
| Part of the range | Written (B-flat trumpet) | Sounds as (concert) | What to look for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low register | F-sharp 3 to C4 | E3 to B-flat 3 | Written notes below F-sharp 3 are off the horn and point to a slip |
| Middle register | C4 to C5 | B-flat 3 to B-flat 4 | The core of most melodies; check octave placement on lip slurs |
| Upper register | C5 to C6 (high C) | B-flat 4 to B-flat 5 | Solos and lead lines peak here; confirm each high note's octave |
| Above high C | Above C6 | Above B-flat 5 | Lead trumpet territory, worth verifying by ear |
What should a trumpet player check after transcribing?
Brass playing has its own habits, and each one is something a transcription has to interpret.
For a full walkthrough, read how to turn a trumpet melody into sheet music.
- Lip slurs and rips, which can show up as runs of quick passing notes
- Shakes and falls at the ends of phrases
- Muted passages, where a cup or harmon mute changes the tone and can mask the pitch
- Half valve effects and bends, which sit between written notes
- Doubled lines, where a sax or trombone playing along can blend into the part
Who uses trumpet transcription?
Jazz students lifting a solo off a record, players in a church or community band who need a part nobody wrote down, and teachers writing out a fanfare or a pop hook for a lesson. In each case the recording exists and the part does not.
Pick the clearest version you can find. A live take where the trumpet is close to the microphone beats a studio mix where it sits behind a wall of guitars.
Is trumpet transcription in beta, and does it cover the rest of the band?
Trumpet is in beta, marked by the Beta badge in the instrument picker. Single instrument mode isolates the trumpet from the full mix and ignores the other parts.
For the rest of the band, Multi-Instrument (beta) writes a separate part for each instrument in one pass, trumpet, trombone and the rest of the horn section included, with multitrack MIDI for a DAW. When the trumpet is the part that matters, single instrument mode on this page still gives the cleanest line.
