Features
Chords Heard in the Audio
Chord symbols are detected by listening to the recording itself, then placed above the score at the point where each change happens.
Follow Them on the Piano Roll
The same chords show on the falling-note piano roll, so you can watch a change arrive as you hear it and slow playback down to catch the quick ones.
Toggle Them, Flag Them
The Chord Symbols switch shows or hides them. When one sounds off, the Wrong chords? link on the score lets you tell us about it.

How do I find the chords of a song?
Upload the recording to Songscription or paste a YouTube, TikTok or Instagram link, then choose an output. Detected chord symbols are written above the score and shown on the piano roll. Use the Chord Symbols switch to show or hide them.
Can I get only the melody and the chords?
Yes. Pick the lead sheet output and you get the melody on one staff with chord symbols above it. Pick piano instead when you want every note written out with the chords on top.
What should I do if a detected chord is wrong?
Detection can miss, especially on dense or unusual harmony. Report it with the Wrong chords? link that appears on scores with chords, and go with your ears whenever a symbol and the recording disagree.
Do I need to know music theory to read the chords?
No. The chords use standard symbols such as C, Am or G7. The letter is the root note, and anything after it describes the chord's quality, like minor or a seventh.
Can I find chords for free?
Yes. You can transcribe unlimited 30-second clips for free, with a free trial for longer ones. Paid plans give you more transcription time and support for longer files.
How do I find the chords of a song from audio?
Give Songscription the recording and pick the kind of score you want back. Chord symbols are detected from the audio and appear above the notation and on the piano roll, ready to read or play along with.
- Bring the song. Upload an audio or video file, paste a link, or record whatever is playing near you in the browser.
- Choose the output. Lead sheet is preselected for melody and chords only. Switch to piano if you want the full part written out as well.
- Read the changes. Follow the chord symbols over the score or on the piano roll during playback, slowed down if the changes come fast.
- Export or change key. Download a PDF or MusicXML file, or transpose the song so the chords land in a key that suits you.
Where do the chords appear, and what can I do with them?
In two views at once. The score prints chord symbols above the staff, and the piano roll shows them next to the falling notes during playback.
| Where | What you see | Handy for |
|---|---|---|
| Sheet music | Chord symbols above the notation | Strumming, comping or printing a chart |
| Piano roll | Chords alongside the falling notes | Hearing and seeing each change in time |
| Lead sheet output | Melody on one staff with chord symbols over it | A compact page of tune and harmony |
| Chord Symbols switch | Shows or hides the symbols | A cleaner page when you only want the notes |
What chords are in this song, and how sure is the answer?
The symbols you see are what the model detected in the recording, so treat them as a strong starting point rather than the final word. Check any chord that surprises you by playing it along with the track.
When a symbol doesn't match what you hear, use the Wrong chords? link on the score so we know where detection went astray. Our guide to getting the chords for any song has tips for checking a progression by ear.
Should I use a lead sheet or a full piano score?
Use a lead sheet when the tune and the changes are all you need, and a piano score when you want every note written out with the chords above it.
If a printable melody-and-chords chart is the main goal, the lead sheet generator page goes into that format in detail.
- Lead sheet: melody plus chord symbols on one staff, a quick chart for singers and players who fill in the rest
- Piano: two-hand notation with chords on top, for learning the whole part
- Unsure which format suits you? Piano solo vs piano-vocal vs lead sheet compares them side by side
